In August 2014 I had the chance to visit a stunning photography exhibit of Croatian photographer Marija Braut, b. 1929. Acknowledged as one of the only living heirs to the “Zagrebat School” of the 1930s, Braut’s hallmark became her unique development of warm blacks and halftones rarely seen in hand chemically processed photographs. Braut has captured her favorite subject, the capital Croatian city of Zagreb, from former Yugoslavia through its post-war years. This is a pen and ink drawing based on a photograph Braut took of a homeless man, 1980. My focus was to over exaggerate his weathered hands, and highlight the textural differences between his overcoat and trousers. I hope to produce a few more images for a portfolio set that will be available for sale soon depending on interest. Croatian homeless man, detail, based on photograph by Marija Braut, felt tip pen on paper, September 2014. #marijabraut #zagreb #croatia #photography #art #illustration #penandink #felttippen #copic #blackandwhite @artcomesfirst @virgilabloh @mariabiamontoya @margarethugh @rickrossie @rrmii @sambucistria @jaredmuralt
